DrCoool Air Conditioning

Air Conditioner Replacement

Professional split system and ducted air conditioning Replacement across Sydney & Brisbane.

Air Conditioner Replacement Overview

Replacing an old air conditioner in Sydney is one of the most practical upgrades a homeowner can make. Modern reverse cycle split systems are significantly more efficient than units from 10–15 years ago — lower running costs, better heating performance, quieter operation, and improved air filtration.

Dr.coool handles air conditioner replacement across Greater Sydney. We supply the new unit, remove and decommission the old one, and complete the installation — all in a single visit. As with all our work, the price is fixed based on your property details and photos. No surprises on the day.

If your existing system is underperforming, making noise, or simply old enough that you'd rather replace than repair, submitting photos of the current setup is the fastest way to get an accurate replacement quote.

What Affects the AirCon Replacement Cost

Replacement cost depends on several factors, some of which are specific to the existing installation:

For a detailed look at what drives installation costs, see our aircon installation cost guide.

New unit capacity and brand.

The cost of the replacement unit itself is the largest variable. This depends on the capacity (kW) required for the room and your brand preference.

Reusable infrastructure.

A replacement job can often reuse the existing wall bracket, pipe run, and electrical circuit — particularly if the original installation is under 10 years old and in good condition. Reusing existing infrastructure reduces material cost. We'll confirm what can be reused based on photos of the current setup.

Refrigerant compatibility.

Older units may use R22 or R410A refrigerant. New units use R32. If the existing pipe run used R22, it cannot be reused for an R32 system and needs to be replaced. We'll identify this from the existing unit details before quoting.

Old unit removal and disposal.

All replacements include decommissioning the existing unit — which involves refrigerant recovery in compliance with Australian regulations — and responsible disposal. This is included in our replacement quotes.

Electrical circuit.

If the new unit requires a larger circuit than the original, additional electrical work may be needed. This is common when upgrading to a significantly higher-capacity unit.

FAQs

How do I know if my aircon needs replacing rather than repairing?

Age and fault type are the two main factors. As a general guide: a repair that costs less than 30–40% of replacement cost on a unit under 10 years old is usually worth doing. A major component failure (compressor, PCB) on a unit over 10–12 years old often isn't cost-effective to repair — replacement delivers a better outcome and a fresh warranty. If you're unsure, submit your unit details and we'll give you an honest assessment. See also our repair page.

Will the new unit fit in the same location as the old one?

Usually yes. Most modern split systems have similar indoor unit dimensions to their predecessors. Occasionally, a new model is slightly larger or smaller, which can affect wall bracket compatibility or pipe entry position. We check this based on the unit model before installation.

What happens to my old unit?

The old unit is fully decommissioned: refrigerant is recovered and handled in compliance with Australian regulations, the unit is disconnected and removed, and it's disposed of responsibly. This is included as standard in all replacement quotes — not charged separately.

Can I upgrade to a higher capacity when replacing?

Yes. Replacement is a good opportunity to right-size if the original unit was too small for the room. A capacity upgrade may require additional electrical work if the original circuit doesn't support the new unit's requirements. We'll identify this from the existing setup details and include any necessary electrical work in the quote.
